Following their wedding, the couple gave birth to their daughter, Greta "Gigi" Garner, on 4th January 1958. She is a published author, songwriter, philanthropist, and artist. They were together for over five decades, but sadly, Mr. Garner died less than a month before their 58th marriage anniversary.

The Maverick star had a chronic knee problem for which he had performed knee replacement surgery for both of his knees in 2000. Similarly, he underwent quintuple bypass heart surgery on 22nd April 1988. 

Furthermore, on 11th May 2008, he underwent surgery as he suffered from a severe stroke two days earlier. On 19th July 2014, the Nichols actor was found dead due to a heart attack caused by coronary artery disease.
